During May's annual Lupus Awareness Month, I enjoy working with the color purple. Purple is used to symbolize lupus. It is a color that combines the calm stability of blue with the powerful energy of red. The jewel tones used in this painting - amethyst and deep purple, the rich blue of sapphires, and the iridescence of opals (my birthstone) - bring to mind royalty: The Crown Jewels.
